A city that keeps living after you log off

Thirty-two people live in Kalderis, and every one of them is an AI agent you can actually talk to. They remember what you said, talk about you once you've left, and keep the city running whether anyone is watching or not.

Kalderis, right now

Kalderis right now

Everything in this section comes from the running world a few seconds ago, and it changes while you read. Where these people go comes from their own decisions, their jobs and the hour of the day.

On the move

  1. Watching the streets…

The people of Kalderis

Each portrait was made by an image model from that person's own description in the game, and every one of them keeps a memory of each player they've met.

The lands around Kalderis

Kalderis sits on the southern shore. From its gate the road runs north through farmland and forest to the river, with a bridge to the west, smoking caves in the eastern hills and darker woods on the far bank.

The green market, crates of produce in afternoon light

Say anything to anyone

There's no list of lines to pick from and no dialogue tree. Every person in Kalderis is an AI agent with their own personality, job, worries and plans, so you can haggle with a stallholder, confide in the bartender or argue with the guard in your own words, and they answer as themselves, about whatever you brought up.

The Salt Barrel tavern by firelight

They remember you

Tell Maren you're looking for your brother and she may ask after him the next time you sit at her bar. Each person in Kalderis decides for themselves what's worth remembering about you, and over weeks those memories settle into an opinion of you that colours how they talk to you.

Torven's forge with the fire lit

Word gets around

When two of them meet they talk, and what they say about you travels. Something you did at the forge in the morning can be tavern gossip by evening, and the listener remembers who told them, so a rumour carries less weight than something they saw for themselves.

The well square on a bright afternoon

The city runs itself

Four ministers argue over trade, farming, the guard and the running of the state. A regent signs off on one decision at a time. Shopkeepers live on what they actually sell, the treasury pays wages every day, and when goods run short you can feel the mood of the city drop.

They write about their days

Every night each of them writes a diary entry about the day they had, and every so often they look back over those entries and change how they see themselves. Nobody wrote who they would turn into.

Work in progress

Walk in and talk to them out loud

We're building Kalderis in 3D in Unreal Engine on top of the same living world. Walk up to anyone and just speak. They're the same AI agents as in the browser game, so they take in what you actually said and answer out loud in their own voice, from their own memories of you. The Salt Barrel and the market square already work this way, and the people in them come and go as they move around the live city.

Where it's heading

Plans change as we build. This is what we're working toward, in roughly this order.

  1. Playable now

    Kalderis in your browser

The whole city with its people, economy and government, played in text with painted scenes. It's what the button at the top opens.

  2. Being built

    Kalderis in 3D, by voice

The Unreal Engine version above, spreading out from the tavern and the market square to the rest of the city.

  3. Next

The first chapter of the story

A story arc running across the whole city, with an ending that can put a player on a throne.

  4. Next

Stories that grow out of their lives

Errands replaced by moments in a person's life you happen to walk into, which the city then remembers you were part of.

  5. Later

    Brindlemark, and the roads between

A second city with its own people and government, and caravans carrying goods and news between the two.

Questions people ask

What is Omniira?

Omniira is a multiplayer fantasy role-playing game you play in a web browser. It's set in Kalderis, a medieval city whose people are AI agents you talk to in your own words, with no scripted dialogue. Each of them remembers the players they meet, talks to the others about them, and carries on with their life whether anyone is logged in or not.

How do the characters remember me?

After a conversation the character decides what was worth keeping about you and stores it as a memory with a feeling attached. When you come back, the memories that matter to what you're saying come back to them before they answer. Anything they heard about you from someone else counts for less than what they saw themselves.

Do I need to download anything?

No. Omniira runs in the browser on a phone or a computer. You make a character and you're in.

Can I talk to the characters out loud?

In the 3D version we're building in Unreal Engine, yes: you speak, they hear you and answer in their own voice. That version isn't public yet, so in the browser game you talk to them by typing.

Who makes Omniira?

The Smith Syndicate, a small independent company. How the characters' minds work is written up in our research paper at omniira.ai/research.

Kalderis is open

Make a character and walk in. Somebody at the Salt Barrel will notice you.
